Herring Run

Posted on April 27, 2013

When I was a girl, my dad would take me to the old mill, Stony Brook Grist millĀ  in Brewster Cape Cod, each year to catch the herring as they swam up stream. When I was young we used to try to catch them in our hands as they swam upward towards the larger bodies of water. We also used butterfly nets. It was always a special and magical experience to go watch them swim as they tried to evade us, as we tried to capture them to look at them a bit more closely before returning them unharmed to the stream. The poor herring also had a lot to do to dodge the sea gulls who would come and wait like vultures. After so many years away traveling in foreign lands, my father once again took me to the old mill for the herring run.

Updates On Our Thoughts And Feelings About The Tragedy In Boston

Posted on April 19, 2013 | 3 comments

We have decided to leave town for a couple of days. It has nothing to do with the tragedy in Boston, it was in the plans even before the bombings at the marathon happened. One reason we followed through with our plan is because a child is dead. Many are wounded. A city is in shock and a region is in agony. Many are enraged, and even more just feel mind numbing pain that someone would lash out here at us…. We continued on with our plans like the event never happened. We continued, because he who holds the power wins. He who gives it away to a violent maniac loses. I refuse to allow anyone to take the power away from me. I am born and raised in the Boston area. We are tougher than nails here. They can control their actions, they can use those actions to kill an 8 year old. They can not control my reaction. I simply will not allow it. (more…)

Explosions in Boston

Posted on April 15, 2013

I am deeply upset by what has happened here today in Boston. The whole country is probably also upset. It is ok to be upset. We are weakened today and we feel pain. I know. This is the time to pull together and to look at the people within our country and outside of it with compassion rather than rage. As a person from Boston, I urge us all to not use what has happened today as an excuse to go out and do harm to others. The cycle of violence must end somewhere. Let it end here. (more…)

Once known as Lady Nameless.... Now and forever to be known as Lady Orla.

Once known as Lady Nameless…. Now and forever to be known as Lady Orla.

When I was a kid we had this horrible way to be bratty to the boys we knew. We used to tell them, “Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider. Girls go to Mars to get more candy bars.” Not that we really needed more candy bars in fact many of us myself included could do with a few fewer candy bars… But not the point….
